School Mission and Vision

VLCS's mission is to provide a rigorous educational program that emphasizes academics, leadership, and visual and performing arts (VAPA). The school's vision is to "develop community leaders, one student at a time" by building character that supports core values such as trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship. The instructional philosophy focuses on creating an environment where students are well-mannered leaders with exceptional listening skills, and the school commits to educating the whole person by including social skills and character development alongside academics and arts training.1

A school psychologist intern is a graduate student in the final stage of their training, working under the direct supervision of a credentialed school psychologist. Their role is to bridge the gap between academic theory and professional practice by delivering a comprehensive range of psychological services within a school setting.

In California, interns typically complete at least 1,200 hours of fieldwork to earn their Pupil Personnel Services (PPS) Credential.

Core Responsibilities

The responsibilities of an intern are designed to mirror those of a full-time school psychologist, though they are performed with closer oversight.

  • Psychoeducational Assessments: Conducting comprehensive evaluations to determine eligibility for special education. This includes administering cognitive and achievement tests, observing students in the classroom, and interviewing parents and teachers.
  • IEP Participation: Interpreting assessment results for Individualized Education Program (IEP) teams and helping to develop student goals and placement recommendations.
  • Counseling and Intervention: Providing individual or group counseling to students to support their social, emotional, and behavioral development.
  • Consultation: Collaborating with teachers and parents to develop strategies for managing classroom behavior or supporting a student’s specific learning needs.
  • Crisis Intervention: Assisting with school-wide crisis response and providing immediate support to students in mental health distress.
  • Data Analysis: Using school-wide data (attendance, behavior incidents, etc.) to inform Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) and other preventative programs.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Credentials: Requires a California Commission on Teacher Credentialing certificate (or equivalent), NCLB highly qualified status for elementary, middle, and CLAD.

Training Requirements & Limits

To ensure a well-rounded experience, professional guidelines (such as those from NASP and the CTC) often place specific parameters on the intern's workload:
